Published11.2.2025

The Asia New Zealand Foundation Te Whītau Tūhono is excited to announce the appointment of its inaugural non-resident fellows for 2025: Prof Joseph Chinyong Liow from Singapore and Raf Manji from New Zealand.

Both bring exceptional Asia expertise and will be working to support the Foundation’s efforts to grow and deepen New Zealand’s understanding of developments across Asia and why they matter to New Zealand’s future.

“We are thrilled to welcome Prof Liow and Mr Manji as our inaugural fellows,” says Suzannah Jessep, chief executive of the Foundation. “These fellowships are a significant step toward ensuring New Zealand has access to world-class expertise and timely insights on the key issues shaping Asia’s rise.”

Prof Joseph Chinyong Liow is a leading expert in Southeast Asia's security and political dynamics and is the Tan Kah Kee Chair in Comparative and International Politics at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His research focuses on security issues in the Asia-Pacific and Muslim social and political movements in the region.

Raf Manji is an expert on New Zealand-Asia relations, particularly in trade and economic relations, climate change and sustainability. He has worked as an investment banker, in local government and in the non-profit sector. He holds a degree in economics and social studies from the University of Manchester and a master's in international law and politics from the University of Canterbury.

The Fellowships run from February to December 2025 and will include the delivery of in-depth written analysis as well as public engagements in New Zealand.

This announcement follows the launch of the fellowship programme at the Asia Summit in October 2024, marking a significant milestone in the Foundation’s 30-year legacy.
