New Zealand visit for Southeast Asian tourism entrepreneurs


The Asia New Zealand Foundation Te Whītau Tūhono is offering up to eight young Southeast Asian tourism entrepreneurs and business leaders the opportunity to visit New Zealand and attend TRENZ, New Zealand's largest international tourism business event and most important event of the year on the tourism events calendar.

The week-long programme will give participants better understanding of New Zealand’s world-renowned tourism sector, a chance to interact with fellow entrepreneurs working in tourism, and gain insights to connect with New Zealand tourism businesses.

About the trip

Trip Dates: 2-9 May 2024

 During the trip you will: 

  • learn about the New Zealand business environment, specifically with regards to tourism 
  • meet and network with entrepreneurs and business leaders from New Zealand 
  • connect with government officials, the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s Leadership Network and Foundation stakeholders 
  • take time to understand the culture of New Zealand 
  • attend TRENZ, the largest international tourism business event in New Zealand.  

By going on this trip, you will: 

  • grow your awareness and knowledge of doing business in New Zealand 
  • deepen your connections with key industry leaders and entrepreneurs 
  • grow confidence as an entrepreneurs and of succeeding offshore.  

The Foundation will work with relevant officials in both the New Zealand and ASEAN to deliver the programme. 

Who can apply

The visit is for an entrepreneurs or business leaders at CEO or senior management level involved in tourism from ASEAN countries.

Outstanding start-up entrepreneurs or emerging entrepreneurs will also be considered. No knowledge or experience of New Zealand is required. 

Applicants must:

  • be based in and have citizenship of one of the ASEAN member countries 
  • be interested in connecting with equivalents from other countries and exploring international business opportunities 
  • be confident public speakers willing to engage in dialogue with entrepreneurs from other countries 
  • be able to demonstrate leadership in their field and a working level proficiency of English language ability 
  • be willing to contribute to the relationship between New Zealand and ASEAN
  • be aged under 40.

- February 2024: shortlisted applicants notified 

- Early February 2024: shortlisted applicants accepted 

- Early March 2024: applicants apply for visas 

- Mid April 2024: pre-departure briefing  

- 2 May 2024: Delegation begins 

Costs

The Asia New Zealand Foundation will fund the costs of successful applicants, including a return economy airfare, domestic transport, accommodation as well as most meals and miscellaneous expenses.

Participants will need to cover their own personal spending money, visas and travel insurance (mandatory).  

Selection process

Applications will be assessed by Asia New Zealand Foundation staff in consultation with external experts, and relevant embassies.

About the Foundation's ASEAN Young Business Leaders Initiative

This opportunity is part of the ASEAN Young Business Leaders Initiative (YBLI), a key part of the New Zealand government’s ASEAN strategy. The initiative was established to facilitate trade and build networks and connections between entrepreneurs and business leaders in Southeast Asia and in New Zealand.  

As of October 2023, 118 business leaders and entrepreneurs from across all ASEAN countries have visited New Zealand and 65 business leaders and entrepreneurs from New Zealand have travelled to Southeast Asia since the programme’s inception in 2011.
