Student Sports Fund


The Student Sports Fund provides grants for secondary and tertiary students travelling to Asia for sports to include cultural activities to their itineraries.

By providing students the opportunity to extend their experiences in Asia to include cultural activities, we hope to ignite their curiosity to learn more about the country they are visiting and inspire them to share their experiences with fellow students, friends and whānau on returning to New Zealand.

Key dates

  • The next application round opens Monday, 5 August 2024.
  • Applications close Monday 2 September.
  • Applicants will be notified of the success of their application Monday 7 October.

There are two funding rounds per year (usually in January and August).

Eligibility

The Foundation supports students and teams who meet the following criteria:

Secondary students/teams

  • School groups travelling to Asia with the key purpose of participating in sport
  • students must be over the age of 14 years.

Tertiary students/teams 

  • Students who are representing New Zealand and/or their tertiary institution internationally through University and Tertiary Sports New Zealand endorsed events.

All applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

 

What can the funding be used for?

Funding can go towards in-country transportation, tickets, entry fees, food and accommodation (at the discretion of the Foundation)*

The following is a list of some suggested activities:

  • Visit a cultural site such as a shrine, museum or gallery
  • Attend a sporting event
  • Attend a festival
  • Participate in a craft-making workshop.

How much can I apply for?

Funding is designed to support half/full days of cultural activities. Budget up to a maximum of $300 per person and no more than $7000 per team.

Funding must be used within 12 months of the date of your application.

 

Terms and conditions

Successful applicants will be required to agree to the standard terms and conditions for Asia New Zealand Foundation funding recipients.

Funding must be used within 12 months of the date of your application

 Foundation funding recipients are expected to:

  • provide a 500-600 word article for the Asia New Zealand Foundation website, including photos (to be submitted while undertaking the trip or within two weeks of completion).
  • submit a report on their experience accounting for how the funding was spent (further details will be provided to successful applicants)
  • seek opportunities to share their experience on return to New Zealand
  • remain engaged with the Asia New Zealand Foundation..

Note: The Asia New Zealand Foundation is liable to inspection by the Office of the Auditor General. Therefore, all successful applicants will be required to account for the spending of funds received. The Foundation will require the funds to be returned if their use cannot be adequately accounted for.

Applicants must submit reports on any outstanding funds they have received before a new application will be considered. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
