Sir Anand Satyanand

Sir Anand Satyanand has worked as a lawyer, Judge and Ombudsman and was New Zealand’s 19th Governor-General from 2006 until 2011. 

Sit Anand and his wife, Susan, live in Wellington and have three children and five grandchildren.

His grandparents came from India to Fiji under the indentured labour scheme and his father came to New Zealand originally for schooling and medical training.

Sir Anand who was born and raised in Auckland has maintained both professional and personal links through his life with Fiji and India. 

He received the Pravasi Samman Bharatiya Award for public service from the President of India in 2011. 

His current activities are in three layers: patronage of a small number of community organisations, undertaking a programme of speaking to audiences in New Zealand and elsewhere; and lastly holding a small number of offices. 

Sir Anand was Chairman of the Commonwealth Foundation in London from 2013 to 2016, and President of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs.  He is currently Chancellor of the University of Waikato, and a Member of the International Advisory Committee of Transparency International.
