Japan visit a journey of rugby and culture for girls sevens team
Over eleven action-packed days last year, the Manukura Girls Sevens team embarked on the adventure of a lifetime—traveling to Japan where they immersed themselves in the local culture and competed against top rugby teams from around the world. Their visit to Kyoto Seisho High School proved to be a highlight of the tour, providing the team with insights into Japanese school life and an opportunity to share their own cultural traditions with local students. Beyond the rugby field, the team explored Japan’s rich heritage, visiting historic shrines and temples as well as traveling on the iconic Shinkansen (bullet train). In this article, two of the players recount their trip highlights. The team was helped to include cultural activities in their itinerary by a grant from the Foundation's Student Sports Fund.

Arriving at Narita airport and walking off the plane filled me with many emotions. The long lines and pouring rain failed to affect the joy and excitement I had for this trip.
Whereas I thought it would fill me with trepidation, the bustling atmosphere and the sounds of busy crowds created nothing but exhilaration.

One of the highlights of my trip was the unique 'at school' experience, where we had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the daily life of a Kyoto Sensei High School student.
We were fortunate enough to spend a day walking in the shoes of the students there. Being separated into different classrooms, we faced the dual challenge of navigating the academic tasks and the language barrier.
This experience allowed us to not only participate in their educational activities but also to share aspects of our own culture.
Getting the opportunity to teach a class and engaging with both students and teachers through our own Māori culture was incredibly rewarding.
We introduced them to the Māori language through easy sayings and games, which provided a valuable cultural exchange and a fun time.
I enjoyed representing not only my whānau but also the MANUKURA kaupapa, and I had the opportunity to play my chosen sport on the world stage.
This trip has definitely resonated with me and will remain a treasured memory.

Te Maia Sweetman (Year 12)
I've had many experiences in sports, but few compare to the opportunity to pursue my passion in Japan—representing our kaupapa on a global stage and showcasing what MANUKURA has to offer. It stands as an unforgettable chapter in my life.
The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly the opportunity to meet new people and be in their culture.
From the moment we arrived, the warmth and hospitality of the Japanese people was evident. They welcomed us with open arms, eager to share their traditions and learn about ours.
Through these interactions, I gained a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and its values, which are deeply rooted in respect, humility, and a strong sense of community.
Japan is a country rich in history and natural beauty, and we made the most of our time by exploring some of its most iconic landmarks and hidden gems.
In Tokyo, we marvelled at the bustling streets of Shibuya. Our journey also took us to Kyoto, a city renowned for its well-preserved temples, traditional wooden houses, and stunning gardens.

Our team was grateful for the opportunity to be part of the tournament, fully aware that many other schools did not have the same opportunity.
This sense of gratitude permeated our entire experience. For me, this trip was a revelation of the possibilities that lie ahead. It showed me how far the sport can take me in life, not just in terms of competition but also in personal growth and cultural exchange.
The experience ignited a dream within me to one day represent New Zealand on an even larger stage. It reinforced the importance of dedication, perseverance, and an open heart in the pursuit of my goals.
