Hogan Lovells law internship, Japan


This opportunity is for a third or fourth-year law student or recent graduate to intern in Japan with one of the world’s leading legal practices, Hogan Lovells.

The Hogan Lovells law intern will join the firm's mergers and acquisitions group at their Tokyo office.

The intern will be given meaningful work relevant to their area of study and a mentoring supervisor who will be assigned to monitor their professional development.  

The internship is scheduled for three months commencing in November 2024, with the exact dates to be settled after the selection process. 

The purpose of the internship programme is to provide New Zealand tertiary students with an experience of working in a business environment in Asia in order to gain a better understanding of the people, places and culture of the host country.

What you'll do

The intern will be given meaningful work relevant to their area of study and a mentoring supervisor will be assigned to monitor their professional development.  

The intern will assist the mergers and acquisitions team to: 

  • conduct research on legal issues  
  • prepare legal documents and presentations  
  • draft memorandums  
  • analyse legal issues.

The intern will also take part in a range of formal and social events to help them get to know the teams at Hogan Lovells and experience the company’s culture.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Hogan Lovells law internship, applicants must be: 

  • New Zealand citizens or have permanent resident status
  • a third or fourth-year law undergraduate or recent graduate  
  • in good health 

Who we're looking for

The ideal candidate will: 

  • be a native English language speaker 
  • be adaptable, mature, reliable and resilient
  • be interested in pursuing a career involving Japan and/or the wider Asia region
  • have strong critical and analytical skills
  • have high attention to detail and evidenced based decision making.

What's covered

The Foundation will cover:  

  • return airfares
  • accommodation costs
  • most living costs.

The intern will be required to:

  • contribute $500 of their own funds to cover some living expenses while offshore
  • take out appropriate travel insurance (subsidised by the Foundation). 

The Foundation and Hogan Lovells  will jointly deliver pastoral care to provide for the intern’s professional development and overall welfare.

Terms and conditions

Interns are expected participate in Foundation professional development activities and networking events after they return and seek opportunities to share their internship experience. Sharing your experience with others is an important part of this initiative as it enlightens others about the Foundation, the internship programme and developments in Asia. 

Successful applicants will be required to agree to the standard Terms and Conditions for Asia New Zealand Foundation funding recipients.

Reporting requirements

Foundation interns are expected to write a 600-word article (with accompanying photos) on their internship that will appear on the Foundation’s website (to be submitted during the internship) and write a final three-page report evaluating the internship experience at the end of the programme.

  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an in-person or online panel interview to select the successful candidate. 
  • The successful candidate will be advised in late July 2024.  
  • All selected interns will be supported to attend a group induction day in Auckland in late November 2024.  
  • The internship is scheduled for three months commencing in November 2024, with the exact dates to be settled after the selection process.
