Seriously Asia Revisited - a roadmap for NZ's engagement with Asia
The Asia New Zealand Foundation Te Whītau Tūhono has released its latest report exploring the future of Asia – Aotearoa New Zealand relations and how to position New Zealand for success in the coming decades.
Titled Seriously Asia Revisited: A Roadmap for 2024 and Beyond, the report captures key insights and recommendations from over 100 of Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading voices on Asia, plus new survey results from leading experts in Asia.
The report finds New Zealand has prospered across many parts of Asia, but what is needed going forward – to take advantage of opportunities and manage risks – may be different to what we have been doing in the past.
“Asia will be the centre of gravity for many of the sectors, regions and developments that are going to be most consequential to New Zealand’s future," says Suzannah Jessep, Foundation director of Research and Engagement.
"If New Zealand is going to be positioned for success, and if New Zealanders are going to thrive in partnership with Asia, then it’s critical that they have the right skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed.”
Looking back at the Seriously Asia programme of work the Foundation conducted in 2003, the Seriously Asia Revisited project set out to examine how far Aotearoa New Zealand has come in developing its Asia relations over the past twenty years, through the lens of four themes: Society and Culture; Politics and Security; Trade, Tourism and Investment; and Innovation and Sustainable Development.
The Foundation will be actively involved in supporting the implementation of the report's recommendations via programmes and initiatives in 2024 and beyond.
